It seem the latest thing in sud guns is to build a hybrid spud gun. Its a great idea. Making the gun fire more efficently.
Basically it is like supercharging the chamber. I have done this a long time ago, way before I seen anything about hybrid spud guns at all. Must have been around 1998.
It is a simple modification you can do to any combustion spud gun. I took a small pump from a power lumbar support in a car seat. then I connected it to the chamber. It will not presurize the chamber greatly, but it does increase the air fuel ratio, and also helps mix the fuel and air.
After putting in the fuel, I would turn it on and wait a number of seconds, depending on the size of the chamber. I did not use any math to figure this out, it was mostly trial and error. It worked so well. It increased the power and range greatly. The gun would produce a much louder bang, and more kick back.
I did a test using a smaller sud gun, and a lager one. Fired them both with no charging. the larger on definatly fired further then the smaller one. then I fired them with the smaller one charged, and the smaller one actually fired further then the larger one. I was very excited.
My goal was to make a smaller gun with as much or more power then a larger one.
I had succeded.

Sounds to me like what you were doing was airing out the chamber, only that you'd put the fuel in already. Or was the fit between your potatoes and the barrel good enough to hold some psi?
