yeah im going to, remember this is a test gun, i wan't to build a full scale cannon. as for the caulk tube on this gun, i think it's strong enough to hold up for a while without any problems. if it dies i can just get another, it's easy enough to replace

Sounds alright. As for the trigger.... this will be fun. I'll do some thinking on it.

haha, yeah, it will be pretty unique. i have a piece of steel i was going to mount behind the chamber assembly to hold the bolt back and to build the trigger off of

Hey, I'm starting to come around on this issue. It looks like you've got an idea that could work. I'd agree with sgort87, though, that the caulk tube being cardboard doesn't bode well for durability. If it were my project, I'd get some 2" PVC and make a piston for that, then get (or make) a huge spring to fire it with. I'd have a bolt sticking out of the back of the piston that would let you pull the thing back, and also be part of the trigger system (ie, make the trigger grip the bolt somehow, and then release it). The tension springs on the outside are going to creat problems b/c they will tend to make the piston turn sideways and jam. But other than that, yeah, as long as you aren't planning on using a 4" piston/chamber and 2" barrel and shooting entire spuds, I think the spring idea will work nicely.
Just for grins, shall we build a spring-powered gun, but instead of using a conventional spring, use a cross-bow style set up? Wookie bow-caster anyone?

haha yeah. the calk tube is a plastic one though, just to let you know. i had thought about the springs jamming the gun, i made sure that they were exactly the same on both sides and i have a large washer in the gun that makes it impossible to turn the piston sidways. the trigger is all that im having problems with right now, and attaching it to the springs. that's the only real problem i have with the external springs, you need to figure out a way to attach them

Well with a PVC chamber it should be easier to attach the spring because with a heavy plastic you can afford to cut slots into the sides. But that may also cause a sealing problem. Your best bet is to return those springs and find a pushing spring. And to c0ck it you should use a lever on the side of the gun. With PVC and a push spring this projects will not only be easier, but it will be stronger and a lot more reliable.

Nah, those would suck. Try a car parts store or ebay for shock springs. I found this auction for you. I'm not sure what the spring constant will be, but it should be good. It also looks as if it should fit in the chamber. search.ebay.com/shock-spring_W0QQfromZR8QQfrtsZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1 Look on there for the "STOCK REAR SHOCK SPRING FOR 2000 YAMAHA YZ-250 (USED)By the time you see this it may have bumped itself to the first page, so just click on the "Page 1" link

Well at this point you are definitely going to need to make this chamber out of PVC. The caulk tube will not cut it. But it should actually be easier now. Make it out of 2" PVC and cap the back end off with a hole drilled for the bolt to be pulled through. Then put a reducer on the front end and attach the barrel. You also might want to think of a way to make a lever to c0ck it. As for triggering, look up some diagrams on trigger frames to find out how they work. Then build something similar.

i have a whole book on trigger setups. to make the chamber out of pvc i need a larger spring than i have, i want to try this first before i change it around. i might not even make a triger for it, i just want to see how much air i can get out of it before i make a larger one

Alrighty, tell me how it works when you get it done.
